NFL teams received an updated proposal on the 4th-and-15 onside alternative, stating the play will be an untimed down and it can only be used in regulation, not overtime.
Each summer, the league attempts to make the game safer. Eliminating the onside kick has frequently been a target topic, and this proposal seems to have more traction than in previous years. The untimed down element prevents teams who just scored to take the lead from running around, wasting time and launching the football as high and far as possible out of bounds, as we've seen in other instances. NFL owners will vote on the rule change on Thursday.
