Washington's NFL team will be called the 'Washington Football Team' during the 2020 season.
"We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use 'Washington Football Team' immediately."
The club also announced that fans would be able to purchase merchandise with the interim name on it in the coming days, as they unveiled new player uniforms including helmets scrubbed of the team's former logo.
Washington placed QB Alex Smith (leg surgeries) on active/PUP.
It gives the organization a chance to see where he's at during camp. The team can always opt to remove him at any point ahead of the regular season, though any extended stay would guarantee his absence through Washington's first six games. Smith remains under contract through 2022 — Washington does have a team-friendly out with "only" $16.2 million in dead cap to take on after this year — but the team should know where the 36-year-old stands health-wise by the time their regular season opener commences on September 13.
Alex Smith, who suffered a devastating tibia and fibula fracture in 2018, has received clearance from his surgical team to return to full football activity. "For me, all eyes are on practice," Smith said. "That's the next step. I have to go prove to myself and certainly to everybody else that I can go practice."
Washington released RB Derrius Guice. Guice was released following his domestic violence-related arrest. ESPN's John Keim reports that charges against Guice stemmed from three separate incidents earlier this year. With Guice gone, Washington will move forward with Bryce Love and rookie Antonio Gibson competing with Adrian Peterson for snaps. Guice will be facing a minimum six-game suspension if he lands a second chance.
Derrius Guice was arrested on domestic violence-related charges. The charges include three counts of assault and battery, destruction of property, and one count of strangulation — a felony charge. It's the latest downward trend for Guice, who missed 11 games to knee setbacks last year after losing his entire rookie season to ACL surgery. Guice is facing at least a six-game suspension under the NFL's domestic violence policy.
Washington Football Team activated QB Alex Smith from the active/PUP list.
The move allows him to participate in football drills. Washington coach Ron Rivera has expressed numerous times that Smith would be in the mix as long he's healthy. Saturday's update means that remarkable scenario could soon become a reality.
There are still several dominoes that would have to fall in order for him to see gameday action again but Smith re-joining the team on the practice field is a hugely important step in that process.
Football aspirations aside, this moment of triumph, which was commemorated in an Instagram post shared by his wife Elizabeth, serves as a major milestone for both Smith and his family.
