Williams ended his holdout last week but made clear he won't play for the Redskins again, ripping the team's medical staff for continually neglecting what turned out to be a cancerous growth on his head. Determined to make this bitter divorce as ugly as possible, the move to reserve/NFI allows the Redskins to withhold the remainder of his 2019 salary. This is an abysmal way to treat a franchise cornerstone, though this has sadly become the norm for the Snyder-Era Redskins. Williams will surely explore all available options (including potentially filing a grievance through the players' association) to recoup the nearly $6 million he's owed.

The Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in 2017, and he sat behind Smith for a year. Reid knew that Mahomes would be his quarterback of the future, and the Chiefs ended up trading Smith to Washington in early 2018. While Smith led Washington to a 6-4 record, a devastating leg injury ended his season and possibly career.
Smith has had 17 surgeries on his leg since. However, he is not officially retired, and has said that he wants to come back.
