This is a projection for the 2012 season, so predicted progress and decline has been factored into the rankings. The next position is the tight ends.

1. Jermaine Gresham, Bengals: He led AFC North tight ends in receptions (56) and touchdown catches (six) last season. Still, there's a sense he is being underused at a time when five tight ends caught at least 79 passes last season.

2. Ed Dickson, Ravens: He's got everything you want in a tight end: size, speed and athleticism. The next step is his consistency. He caught fewer than three passes in half of his games last season.

3. Heath Miller, Steelers: He's still the most complete tight end in the division. But he turns 30 during the season, and you wonder whether he'll give the Steelers more than 50 catches and two touchdowns like he's done the past two seasons.

4. Dennis Pitta, Ravens: He quietly made a big impact for the Ravens, ranking second on the team with 17 catches on third down last season. The Ravens don't have a tight end combination like the Patriots, but Dickson-Pitta is a solid one.

5. Evan Moore, Browns: The Browns might not need a tight end to block as much this season with Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle. And, with Ben Watson nearing the end of his career after three concussions in 2011, this could be a breakout year for Moore.

This is a projection for the 2012 season, so predicted progress and decline has been factored into the rankings. First up are the wide receivers.

1. A.J. Green, Bengals: You only had to watch one Bengals game this year and see Green's potential. He averaged 16.3 yards per catch and scored seven touchdowns as a rookie, and he's been working out with Larry Fitzgerald this offseason. What could hold Green back is the Bengals' lack of a proven No. 2 wide receiver, which allows defenses to focus their energy on the Pro Bowl receiver.

2. Mike Wallace, Steelers: He finished first among division wide receivers with 72 catches and 1,193 yards receiving, which shows he has outplayed his rookie contract. Still, in his last seven games, he averaged 46.4 yards and scored two touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger's injuries likely factored into Wallace's slump, but it will be up to Wallace to prove that.

3. Antonio Brown, Steelers: Remember when there was a debate whether Brown or Emmanuel Sanders should start for Hines Ward last November? Not anymore. He's fast, elusive and fearless in making catches over the middle. Brown is the No. 2 receiver for the Steelers but he could be the top one on many other teams.

4. Torrey Smith, Ravens: The second-round pick from a year ago finished only behind Green and Julio Jones in receiving yards by a rookie last season. Smith has a chance to become the Ravens' top wide receiver this season. He clicked with Joe Flacco downfield, covering at least 25 yards on five of his seven touchdowns.

5. Anquan Boldin, Ravens: Boldin hasn't put up the numbers the Ravens envisioned when they traded for him. (His 57 receptions were his lowest in seven seasons.) Still, he remains the toughest receiver in the division and steps up in the big games (led Ravens in the playoffs with 10 catches for 174 yards). Some will argue that Cleveland's Greg Little should be on the list, but he has to show more consistent hands after averaging one drop for every five passes thrown his way.

BAL u blagoj prednosti

2012 champs: Baltimore Ravens
Likeliest threat in 2013: Cincinnati Bengals

Why Cincinnati?

Cincinnati has the best team -- on paper -- in the division. The defense is loaded with young, talented players in Geno Atkins, Vontaze Burfict and the oft-forgotten Michael Johnson. Did you know that the Bengals allowed the fewest points in the NFL (102) over the last eight games? That's under 13 points per game. On the other side of the ball, the parts are in place with quarterback Andy Dalton, running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, receiver A.J. Green, tight end Jermaine Gresham and a viable offensive line. Don't forget the rookies, tight end Tyler Eifert and running back Gio Bernard. They might not all be superstars, but no position represents a weakness -- and they're all so youthful.

How it can happen:

» Dalton must take a step forward, particularly in the vertical game. His passer rating was below 60 on throws that traveled at least 20 yards past the line of scrimmage last season. He needs to make defenses play the whole field.
» Getting receiver Mohamed Sanu back healthy -- and a year smarter -- should make a huge difference. The Rutgers product caught four touchdown passes in his last three games as a rookie in 2012.
» If Bernard wins the starting running back job, this could be an 11- or 12-win team. As a threat who will open up the air attack, Bernard can bring the kind of juice that The Law Firm lacks.
