The Miami Dolphins put four-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long on injured reserve Tuesday evening. Long tore his tricep muscle in the first half of Sunday’s 23-16 loss to the New England Patriots.
But here is the multi-million dollar question: Did Long just play his last
game in Miami? The former No. 1 overall pick will be an unrestricted
free agent in March after wrapping up his rookie contract.

Whether to re-sign Long or let him walk is the biggest decision
Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland will make this offseason. It’s a
complex situation with many layers.

Long was once considered the top left tackle in the NFL. But he’s
been plagued by injuries and inconsistency the past two seasons. This is
the second consecutive year Long ended his season on injured reserve.
Can Miami make Long one of the NFL’s highest-paid linemen based on his
play the past two seasons?

Long plays the premium position of left tackle, and good left
tackles are hard to find. Long is no longer elite, but still a top-10
player at his position. The development of rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill also depends on good pass protection on the blindside.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the franchise tag is not an
option for Long. Therefore, the Dolphins have narrowed their choices to a
long-term extension or letting Long sign elsewhere.

I’ve said this before i’ll say it again. The Dolphins NEED a leader
on Defense. Karlos Dansby should be the leader and is payed to be a
leader, but he is not. Safety is the position I look at this off
season where Miami can pick one up. The Dolphins need someone who can
settle the defense down and make a big play when it is needed. What a
better spot then at Safety? There are a few strong safety options that
hopefully the Fins will look at.

Wide Receiver is a BIG need for the Dolphins. But every quarterback
has their safety blanket. Brady has Welker, Flacco had Pitta, the list
goes on and on. Tannehill didn’t have a safety blanket last year, or did
he? Even though Brian Hartline was the #1 receiver for the Phins he was
also a very good player for Tannehill to fall back on many times
throughout the season. It happened at least once a game where Hartline
would see Tannehill was in trouble and come back, get open and use his
great hands to get something out of nothing. If they do not resign
Hartline they need to find someone else who can fill that void, not just
with a number one receiver.

I don’t see why people do not think Hartline would be a good player
to resign. He is a competitor it is hard to say that about most of the
players on the roster. He would be a great number two receiver better
then most number 2′s in the NFL. He can also be a deep threat, even
though his numbers don’t show for it. I can think of 4 times off the top
of my head where Hartline had a step on a corner or safety, and
Tannehill just overthrew him. I would be happy if the Dolphins got a
#1, resigned Hartline and had Bess at the slot.

With word of Reggie Bush being unlikely to resign in Miami, that
leaves the Dolphins with two very young running backs. I think Lamar
Miller will be a very good featured back for them. But Daniel Thomas is
so inconsistent and injury prone. The Dolphins need a veteran second
option at running back. Two guys to look at are Ahmad Bradshaw and Shonn
Greene. Bradshaw has been solid… but when healthy. If, and only if he
is healthy he could be a good fit. Greene is still with the Jets, but
is most likely to be released due to money sometime before free agency
He can still play, and would be a great second option, he plays a more
ground and pound while Miller is more explosive, the two would work
great in South Beach

However, the Dolphins,
with about $38 million in space, are prepared to spend, and
league sources expect them to pursue Jennings heavily. The Green
Bay wide receiver played for head coach Joe Philbin in Green Bay.
Miami could be in the market for Finley as well, whether via trade
or signing should he become available as expected. The Dolphins
expect to lose running back Reggie Bush and will try to work something out with versatile defensive lineman Randy Starks, but it's unlikely they come up with enough to keep him off the market.
The Dolphins would like to sign corner Sean Smith
long-term but may have to franchise him while left tackle Jake
Long's play has waned and his injuries have mounted. Still, letting
a tackle drafted No. 1 overall leave in his mid-20s is pretty much
unheard of. Miami wants to add weapons, particularly on offense, and
should be aggressive this offseason.

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly stonewalling starting running back Reggie Bush. The pending free agent hasn't heard from the team with about a month left before the start of free agency.

A source told Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post
over the weekend that Bush and his camp are "confused" by the entire
situation. Yes, Bush did everything right in his two years in Miami. He
was a good leader who rushed for more than 2,000 yards the past two
seasons. However, Bush should have expected a difficult negotiation.

Miami has quality depth at running back. Rookie Lamar Miller looks like a future starter and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. Daniel Thomas is a former second-round draft pick who is inconsistent but talented enough to be a No. 2 option.

The Dolphins have plenty of money to spend but they don't want to
spend it on a running back. Re-signing Bush won't come cheap, and Miami
feels better using its cap room on upgrading positions like wide
receiver, cornerback and safety. Those are much more pressing needs.

Bush did everything he could to make a good case to return to Miami.
At times he was Miami's only consistent playmaker on offense. But
sometimes free agents are simply a victim of circumstance. This could be
one of those examples.

Miami most likely will give Bush a team-friendly offer to see if he
wants to stay in Miami bad enough to take a reduced rate. But I don't
expect Bush to accept lower than market value. He's earned the right not
to do that with his play on the field the past two years. This could
mean we've seen the last of Bush in a Dolphins uniform.

What's changing

Joe Philbin has managed to keep his coaching staff largely intact, which will be beneficial in helping build on a solid foundation in his sophomore season with the team. What will be changing, though, is the Dolphins' roster, as Philbin and general manager Jeff Ireland look to add playmakers on offense to upgrade the league's 27th-ranked scoring attack and give second-year pro Ryan Tannehill the tools he'll need to develop.

Biggest free agents

» LT Jake Long: Long's injury-plagued past two seasons have diminished his value, but rookie offensive tackle Jonathan Martin was only adequate as his replacement when Long landed on injured reserve with a triceps injury. The Dolphins would be wise to look into exploring a deal to keep him.

» CB Sean Smith: When Ireland traded away cornerback Vontae Davis in the preseason, it signaled the team's intent to keep the talented Smith. The fifth-year corner had the best season of his career under coordinator Kevin Coyle, and if the Dolphins can't sign him to a long-term deal, they could look to use the franchise tag to keep him from escaping.

» WR Brian Hartline: Miami's key offseason objective will be to find playmaking wide receivers to help Tannehill, but that shouldn't be at the expense of Hartline, who had a career-high 74 catches for 1,083 yards in 2012. Hartline can be a quality No. 2 receiver and become more of a playmaker with a legit No. 1 opposite him

What they need

Receiver is the Dolphins' most glaring need, but there are others, too. Defensive end Cameron Wake earned another trip to Hawaii thanks to his outstanding work throughout the season, but the Dolphins were unable to get consistent pressure from elsewhere on defense. Pass-rushing help must be near the top of their list. While Smith improved at corner, it was second-year pro Reshad Jones who looked like the most dangerous weapon in their secondary, and the Dolphins need to find someone else who can score points on defense ... perhaps Baltimore's free-agent safety Ed Reed would like to finish out his NFL career in Miami?

Offseason crystal ball

Miami will be a player for one of the three big-name free-agent receivers, and with $44 million in cap space (currently third in the NFL), the Dolphins will have the money to do it. Greg Jennings seems the logical addition given his Packers past with Philbin -- although that didn't help Matt Flynn -- but at 29 years old and coming off an injury-plagued season, it might not be the best decision. Kansas City Chiefs free agent Dwayne Bowe (also 29) is from Miami and previously has expressed an interest in coming home, but he might not fit the bill as a true playmaker. Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Mike Wallace, therefore, could be the answer, and his speed certainly is something lacking in Miami's offense. If Long leaves, then a tackle will become a focus with the Dolphins' stockpile of five of the top 100 picks in the draft.

Miami Dolphins ($31.3M): They had even more cap space before re-signing WR Brian Hartline, backup QB Matt Moore and putting the franchise tag on DT Randy Starks. But Miami still needs to get second-year QB Ryan Tannehill more help. Luring Mike Wallace or Greg Jennings, who played for coach Joe Philbin in Green Bay, to pair with Hartline makes a ton of sense. RB Reggie Bush and LT Jake Long are among unsigned Dolphins, but Long can be capably replaced by second-year RT Jonathan Martin. Another pass rusher for a defense that needs additional playmakers could trump Bush and Long.
